Admission to the Doctoral Programme

The Center for Doctoral Studies at the University of Vienna is in charge of the admission of doctoral candidates. Official information and guidance on this process is provided by their team.

You can also apply for admission to the Doctoral Programme in Philosophy by following these steps:

  1. Learn more about doctoral studies at the University of Vienna and consider attending an information session.
  2. Identify the admission requirements of the doctoral programme. 
  3. Inform yourself about tuition fees at the University of Vienna. 
  4. Identify 1-2 potential supervisors from our supervisory faculty. Send them an email about the proposed doctoral research project, and request their supervision.
  5. Investigate entry and residence requirements if you are coming from outside Austria. Good starting points are the pages for international doctoral candidates (an overview of all topics), the OeAD (visa requirements) and the International Office (moving to Vienna).
  6. Apply to the doctoral programme via u:space (if you are new student at the University of Vienna, you need to create an account first). Once logged in, in "Studies," click "Doctorate/PhD" and select "Philosophy-Philosophy" (in English) or "Philosophie-Philosophie" (in German).
