Explore VDP training opportunities designed to support your doctoral journey—from onboarding workshops and FÖP preparation to research methods, academic writing, good scientific practice, teaching opportunities, postdoc transition, and career development. Our program brings together workshops offered by a range of partners, including other doctoral schools, experts from the University of Vienna, external trainers, and—importantly—your peers. The aim is to help you build core competencies, earn ECTS credits, and connect with researchers across disciplines. Join us to sharpen your skills, gain confidence, and advance your research.

Doctoral Seminars
The VDP works closely with the Doctoral Directorate of Studies Philosophy to regularly offer doctoral seminars (peer-feedback, research proposal and FÖP preparation, research methods, conference preparation, academic writing, and career-relevant skills in philosophy).

Writing Evenings
Looking for a place to write your dissertation? Do you want to be surrounded by others working on the same task?
Whether you are at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of your doctoral project – writing is one of the most challenging tasks. To make it more enjoyable, structured, and supportive, we would like to invite you to our Writing Evenings! To be honest, they are afternnons, but they end up at the evening.
We meet every Monday from 14:00 to 18:00 in the conference room (3A, NIG - Neues Institutsgebäude, Universitätsstrasse 7) to write together. The workshop is structured into four focused writing blocks (50 min. each) with a social coffee/tea/snacks break in between.
Members from other doctoral schools and MA students of philosophy are welcome!

Writing Retreat
Once a year, the VDP offers its members a five-day writing retreat, traditionally held in an Austrian abbey. We cover accommodation, meals and travel costs so you can focus solely on writing your dissertation.

Summer School
Organising a major international conference or summer school is an important milestone in an academic career. The Vienna Doctoral Summer School in Philosophy offers VDP research teams the opportunity to shape discussions around philosophical topics of their interest while gaining valuable experience in academic leadership and event organisation.
Hosted within the University of Vienna’s summer school program, the event brings together leading international scholars and early-career researchers. It is open to late MA students, PhD researchers, and postdoctoral scholars worldwide and awards 4 ECTS credits.
Teams composed of supervisors, advisors, and PhD researchers at the VDP collaboratively design and host the summer school, strengthening their academic profile, developing organisational skills, and building international research networks.
VDP members receive a call for applications once per year, typically in the second half of the year, inviting teams to propose and organise a future edition of the summer school.
